Recently I have read a few story books. Of them my favourite book is 'Pather Panchali' by Bibhuti Bhushan Bandyopadhyay. Pather Panchali means something like saga of life. It is not a novel in the conventional sense. It is a narration of day to day life of a poor village family. The story deals with a poor village boy ,Apu who had to struggle a lot to overcome his poverty and suffering. Durga,Sarbajaya and Harihar are the other chief characters of this book. Harihar, father of Apu was a poor villager prist. Apu's sister Durga met a premature death. Apu could not forget his sister. The writer did not neglected any details. The book has a universal appeal. I have been greatly impressed by this book. I felt sympathy for the family. To me it is not a book,it is a classic poem of life.
Book is a gateway to the world.
